A perfect balance of heat and flavor. The Datil pepper has a superior fruity flavor with solid heat. Some suggest the peppers were brought to St. Augustine by indentured workers from Menorca (one of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean off the coast of Spain) in the late 18th century, others posit that they were brought from Cuba around 1880 by a jelly maker named S. B. Valls. Today, datil peppers are cultivated throughout the United States, but the majority are still produced in St. Augustine. We have the privilege of growing them here in Ohio!
